Frequently Asked Questions
Which anti-aging ingredient has the most scientific evidence?
Retinoids (including prescription tretinoin and OTC retinol) have the largest body of clinical evidence for reducing the appearance of fine lines and improving skin texture. Topical vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and its derivatives also have substantial evidence for antioxidant effects and brightening. Niacinamide has growing evidence for multiple anti-aging effects.
Is retinol regulated differently in Europe and the US?
Yes. In the EU, retinol is restricted to a maximum of 0.3% in face products and 0.05% in body products, and is not permitted in products for children under 3 years. In the US, retinol concentration in cosmetics is not formally capped, though concentrations are typically kept below 1% for tolerability. Prescription retinoic acid (tretinoin) is regulated as a drug in both markets.
Do peptides actually work for anti-aging?
Peptides are a broad category of ingredients. Some peptides, such as acetyl hexapeptide-3 (Argireline) and palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 (Matrixyl), have in vitro and limited clinical evidence suggesting potential effects on collagen synthesis or muscle contraction. However, the evidence is generally less robust than that for retinoids or vitamin C. Formulation, concentration, and penetration depth significantly affect outcomes.
