Oil Control: Ingredients That Help Manage Sebum
Oily skin is primarily driven by sebaceous gland activity, which is influenced by androgens, genetics, humidity, and stress. While no topical ingredient can permanently alter sebaceous gland activity, several ingredients have clinical evidence for reducing visible sebum, controlling shine, or addressing the downstream effects of excess oil (such as clogged pores and acne). This guide covers those ingredients and separates evidence from marketing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does niacinamide reduce oil production?
Clinical studies have shown topical niacinamide can reduce sebum excretion rate. A 2006 study found that 2% niacinamide applied over 4 weeks significantly reduced facial sebum excretion compared to vehicle control. The mechanism is thought to involve inhibition of sebocyte activity. The effect is dose-dependent to some extent, with most sebum-reduction studies using 2β5% concentrations.
Is salicylic acid good for oily skin?
Yes. Salicylic acid (a beta-hydroxy acid, BHA) is lipophilic β it can penetrate sebum and work inside pores. At 0.5β2%, it exfoliates the inside of follicles, helping to prevent the buildup of dead skin cells and sebum that leads to clogged pores and blackheads. It also has mild anti-inflammatory properties. In the EU, salicylic acid is restricted to a maximum of 2% in rinse-off face and body products and 0.5% in leave-on products. In the US and Japan, similar concentrations are typical in OTC formulations.
What does "oil-free" mean on a skincare label?
"Oil-free" typically means the product does not contain traditional plant or mineral oils. However, the term is not legally defined by most regulatory authorities. Some silicone-based ingredients (like dimethicone) and fatty acid esters may be used in "oil-free" products and can still have comedogenic potential depending on the specific ingredient. The claim relates to formulation type, not comedogenicity.
